Parents of New Students

The admission and registration process for new students and their families can be overwhelming. Choosing the right college is one of the most exciting and difficult decisions your student will ever make. You want them to choose a school that is safe, affordable and has a reputation for academic excellence. Research shows parents are among the most influential people in a teenager's life—especially when it comes to educational and career choices.

The Parent Checklist is a convenient bookmark mailed to the parents of all newly admitted freshmen. It is a guide to assist you and your student with the admission process from the point your student is admitted until the first day of classes. To access the Parent Checklist online click here.

All first time degree-seeking students who are offered admission to Northern Kentucky University and enroll in six or more credit hours must confirm their intention to enroll by submitting a non-refundable $75 enrollment confirmation fee. Your student's enrollment confirmation fee holds his/her spot at NKU. Upon receipt of the enrollment confirmation fee, students can select their orientation date preferences by completing this survey. Payment can be made online at http://mynku.nku.edu, or a check or money order can be mailed to:

Northern Exposure: New Student Orientation
is a requirement for all new students. During orientation, students learn about campus resources, receive their student identification card and schedule their courses. The fee for Northern Exposure: New Student Orientation is $100 per student and $50 per guest or parent. A separate orientation is designed just for transfer students 21 years of age and older who have earned 24 or more credit hours. The Transfer and Adult Learner Orientation does not include course scheduling, but it does provide an opportunity to meet with a faculty or staff member one-on-one to take care of business. We also offer a special orientation program designed and facilitated by our current student veterans for our new student veterans and their families.

To determine which program you should attend, complete the orientation date selection survey. It is highly recommended that at least one parent attend orientation with their student. To learn more about New Student Orientation, click here.

What does orientation look like for parents/guests?

Each orientation program we offer includes a concurrent parent/guest component that provides resources and information to those who support our students.
